What is Altruism? What are the components of an altruistic personality?

“I learned to GIVE not because I have many, but because I know exactly how it feels to have NOTHING.”

Altruism means thinking in interest of other people.

It is the selfless concern about the well being of others.

It is defined as quality of a person to help others without thinking about his personal gains.

All of the above given are definitions of altruism but what does it actually mean? Altruism in actual is defined as the work that we do for others where we do not think about ourselves. Altruism completely means selflessness. It does not matter to us whether the other person can give us something in return or not. We do not think about the reward or anything in return. We actually don’t need it. So, we just care about helping others in any way possible.

Mother Teresa was a living image of an altruistic person because she dedicated her whole life in service of the poor and the abandoned.

“People who love each other fully and truly are the happiest people in the world. They may have little, and they may have nothing, but they are happy people. Everything depends on how we love one another.”

– Mother Teresa

Everyone in this world becomes happy if he achieves his goals/dreams but an altruistic person doesn’t bother about himself. He has concern about people around him. The work he does is for the well being of others without any personal benefit. Here are the qualities/characteristics of an altruistic person.

Helping others

An altruistic person is always ready to help whenever and where ever someone needs them. He never denies to offer help. Even if nobody is willing to help someone he will be always there. For example: Consider a person sitting on the road side shivering. Everyone who passes by will probably ignore him but an altruistic person will definitely find a way and help him by offering his own jacket.

The biggest quality of an altruistic person is that he will always put the well being of others first. Giving your free time to help your friends with their work. Offering your lunch to others even though you are hungry. A person holding altruistic qualities does not care about his own needs because he is always happy in helping people.

An altruistic person is miles away from materialistic world. Everyone today is chained to fulfill their dreams, goals and desires in life but an altruistic person, embrace their selflessness and they love how it makes them feel. They are always happy in making others happy and working for the benefits of the people. They feel joyous in the happiness of others.

An altruistic person is free from doubts, has belief in himself and his abilities. He has inbuilt the quality of being unfailing with which he develops self confidence. Having self confidence makes him clear in his visions and what he wants to do with his life, which is well being of others. Making lives better around you will eventually make your life better.

Altruistic person

If you have the quality of altruism, then your mind definitely becomes pro active. You do not have to wait for the right time and you never wait for a perfect moment to help people. Instead you make the current moment a perfect one to show love and care for people around you because you believe in controlling a situation by causing something to happen rather than waiting to respond to it after it happens.

What motivates people is always a desire. The selfish desires never follow the path of altruism. When a man keeps all of his selfish desires aside and think purely about helping others, only then the person develops altruism. Think about the volunteers helping for the disaster victims.Hence, there can be no altruism if the man is self-centred, selfish.

An altruistic person doesn’t care about what the whole world thinks about him as far as his inner self is satisfied. He knows that he is doing an accurate job of helping people. So, he is least bothered about what the other people might think and does not care if people talk behind his back. He is extremely capable of taking all the negative comments positively and is always optimistic.

It is an excellent job you are interested in awakening the common man to familiarise the need of the hour. Keep it up. Never mind it may take any time to reach your message to last mile.
